Hello Gang:

I learned a bundle with my fuel capacity question.
Without going further I would now make a bet that
MY tanks are the 8 gallon variety. I shall have to
check further on my header tank capacity.

Thanks a million.

What this means to me is that I shall plan on a
2 1/2 hour duration on long cross countries. I
cannot bear to watch my header tank float drop.

When I was a young kid (16) I managed to get
lost on a cross country from Glendale Calif.
to Tucson Arizona. I Found that looking for my
check points was too tiring and just followed the
road. Well I took the wrong fork and wound up
WAY south of the border. I remember watching
that float on the Aeronca's tank dropping and
sweating bullets. After flying north for quite a while,
I landed at Mexicali with the float no longer bobbing
at all. That was 1954 and the lesson I learned has
stayed with me to this day. There is NO way I could
endure watching my Ercoupe's bobber as it drops like
a rock. :-)
(on the return trip I had a check point every 10 miles)

My next query is how long should it take for the two
tanks to equalize? I realize that there are several iterations
of plumbing. My serial 3034 "should" have the first version after
the change to aluminum tanks. According to service memo
43 figure 1, the two wing tanks are interconnected by a line
that has two tees. The tee near the right tank feeds the fuel pump.
The tee near the left tank accepts the over flow from the header tank.

If indeed I am plumbed that way, both tanks should always be about
equal. However recently I started using fuel from my header tank.
When I refueled after a delay of 10-15 minutes after landing, and
after about 20 minutes of use of header tank fuel I found the right
tank dry, and the left with at least 2-3 gallons left. Once the header
tank starts dropping this means no more over flow. This then looks
like it takes MORE than 30 minutes for the two tanks to equalize.

If this is normal you will NEVER be able to use all the fuel in
the wing tanks.

I am going to remove side panels--flooring--etc whatever it
takes to trace my actual plumbing in the near future.

I would be interested if anyone has any comments on their tank
equalization time on 415Cs.

Thanks

Paul
