My single fork shimmied even though everything was new. Bearings, overhauled sissors, etc. I have heard blamed, the single ball bearing of the original single fork nose gear. The double fork has a pair of roller bearings, one in each side of the wheel. My double fork will shimmy once in a while too. I strongly recommend replacing the original steering rod with the beefier kind with the better rod ends on it, I broke the little ball off my original one during a severe shimmying episode. When your Ercoupe shimmys, turn your wheel slightly to the left or right to put a load on it and usually the shimmying stops. Everything is a trade off. Double fork to combat shimmy, raises the nose and lowers the tail. Then you need new biscuits and spacers to get the tail back up. My bellville springs were low, I replaced with new rubber biscuits, added the spacers. Still low. Perhaps I should have replaced with new Bellville springs; oh well, hindsight is 20-20 ain't it?
Since the double fork retrofit , which carries a 5.00 X 5 tire, usually raises the nose and lowers the tail, is it legal to put a smaller tire on the double fork 5" rim? For example substitute the 11.400 X 5 tire by Shin. Aircraft Spruce's catalog says, " it looks like a scaled down 5.00 X 5." If it is not as tall, it would serve to lower the nose and raise the tail a bit. Question, since the double fork is STC'ed with the 5.00 x 5, is it legal to use a different size tire on the rim? Bill Coons, if you are listening, I believe you will know. Thanks. I put a 5.00 x 5 tire and an original 5.00 x 4 tire side by side on the floor and they are approximately the same height. The double fork itself is taller. I have seen a 11.400 x 5 Shin tire and it appears to be not as tall as the 5.00 x 5 although I have never stood the latter two side by side on the floor to compare.
