The mechanical variometers would probably not be rugged enough to deal
with 
the continuos vibration from the engine and the electronic ones are not 
cheap.  The least expensive unit that I know of is the Ball vario which is

about twice as expensive as the common vsi.  Sailplanes need the quick 
response and sensitivity that is really not needed in an airplane.  
In a sailplane the vario is about 100' to 150' behind the aircraft.  An 
airplane does not have much use for that kind of sensitivity but does need

more averaging than a sailplane so that the turbulence is factored out on
an 
approach. 
There may also be a problem with the FAA.  The vertical speed indicator is

not a required instrument in the Coupe so you don't have to have it.  I
don't 
think there is a TSO for the variometers so there may be a paperwork
problem 
installing one into an airplane  as with adding any non tso'd piece ao 
equipment.
