Georgia,

Try the following:

Fundamentals of Aircraft Piston Engines, Norman E. Borden, Jr. and Walter
J.
Cake
Hayden Book Co. 1971 - This book has quite a bit of detail in it. You
can
read the parts that interest you.

Lightplane Maintenance Aircraft Engine Operating Guide Belvoir
Publications/Kas Thomas, Tab Books, 1988 - Excellent book on engines and

their operation. Chapters on Starting, Runup, Takeoff and Climb, Mixture
Management, etc. Good engine book for pilots.

These aren't exactly "For Dummies" books, but they aren't too deep either.
