If they have a report about the Ercoupes and fires, it will probably not
say
whether it was caused by the nose or wing tanks.  I am always amazed that
people get so concerned about the nose tank, despite the fact that all the
old timers had them, and yet the fact that all that stands between their
wing gas and any obstacles is a single thickness of  lightweight metal
doesn't bother them.  I think the real problem is that the wing tanks are
right on the leading edge, in fact they are the leading edge of the center
section.  Having the extra length of the bigger tank sticking out past the
wing attachment point may not help when the wings break off in a crash.
It
would be a toss up for me.  I wouldn't pay extra to get it done.  Glen
