A neighbor of mine (with 3000 hrs.) recently mis-judged his fuel on board and ran out 1 mile from our airpark! He sustained $30,000 damage to his C-180. He had full coverage insurance, but was 10 days out on his Bi-Annual Flight Review! The insurance company refused to pay a dime! I checked mine and I was 6 months out.
The reason I mention this is that I have gone back to Avemco. They will pay if you are in violation of an FAR at the time of the loss. They will pay IF your BFR, annual, and medical are current at the time the policy STARTS, even if they are not current at the time of the loss. I just renewed and while there is some small discount for 2 aircraft, the Forney insured for $15,000 is $366 for liability and $486 for full hull for a total of $852. I have 600 hrs. + TT for comparison. This was about $50 per airplane/yr. more than I was quoted by Old Republic. For me this is worth it not to have them trying to get out of paying on an oversight or mistake. Now just for comparison, on the '71 Cardinal I pay $391 for liability and $946 for $50,000 hull. I questioned why I pay only $100 more for over 3 times as much hull coverage and the answer was that it is much more expensive to repair the older airplanes and/or the loss rate on the Forney/Ercoupe airplanes is greater. This, of course does not explain why I have to pay liability twice, especially since I can't fly both airplanes at once. The ambigious answer to that one was that another pilot could be flying the other plane. So I asked how much having a rider that limits the pilots to me alone would save me - $20/yr. Who they kiddin??
