Using chain is problematic because it has no give. Having them really tight may help a little, but if there's any slack, the plane will be slaming against an un-giving tiedown, and this can actually cause structural damage. Best to use ropes with a little give. Nylon is long lived, strong and widely available. Think about it. You have just fallen from an overhang while rock climbing. Would you want your fall broken by a nylon rope or a chain?
