Stefan and others, When we installed my EGT, two mechanics asked me "which is the hottest cylinder"? They also said that the hottest or leanest cylinder can vary depending on speed and power settings.
We settled on the right-rear, but they told me it isn't necessarily the hottest or leanest. What variations do you see between climb, cruise, cruise-climb, cruise-descent, low-speed cruise, etc.? I can't contribute to the absolute temperature discussion -- mine is the high resolution type gauge with the big gradations. It has an adjustment knob so you can keep it on the scale at various temps. After getting to cruise and leaning to desired degrees rich from peak, I adjust it to the reference mark and it really stands out when it diverges from the reference mark. But, there's no absolute temperature reference. By the way, I REALLY like this kind of gauge because of the fine control it gives me over leaning. I can clearly find peak and lean to 50 rich for cruise or 100 rich for climb. Stromburg carbs lean quite well from my experience, though I have to be patient and make slow adjustments.
