Coupers; What a glorious day! Once we got the Coupe fueled and the frost on the wings polished, we were able to get airborne from West Yellowstone about 0700 AM. We had to circle the airport in order to climb high enough to clear the mountains, and then we headed for the Grand Tetons. We flew through the Jackson hole area at 11,500 feet and then squeezed through the pass to
the Southeast. Out of Jackson Hole, we climbed to 12,500 in order to clear the mountains to the East, and headed for Gillette, WY. Just as we entered the down wind leg, at 3 hours and 15 minutes after take off, the fuel pump light came on and the wings were empty. Sixteen gallons was just enough to get us there. The Coupe does not burn much fuel at 12,500! I called my cousin Rod Mass to say hello and talked for a few minutes. Then we were on out way to Rapid City, SD via the Devils Tower. Joel was not too impressed with the tower from 7500 feet. I guess it looks a lot bigger when you are on the ground looking up. After we looked at the geology museum at the School of Mines, and got settled in the motel, I called two local fellow Coupers, Don Wilson and Milo Schindler. Don sold his coupe to Butch Howard in Glendive, MT, but is still a Couper at heart. Milo has a real pretty coupe N411F which has had some of the interior items copied from John Wright, Jr. Coupe. They are both really nice guys. I just got off the phone from talking to Vern Kramer. He was working at B & L aircraft in 1961 when I learned to fly here in Rapid City. We closed out the day by taking a drive up skyline drive to look at the dinosaurs. Joel says that was the highlight of the day as far as he was concerned. I think that flying above 12,000 feet with 100 mile visibility is pretty darn great myself.
