Here are the FARs which cover markings:

It's a little confusing because the section 45.29 is "Size of Marking",
but
45.22(b)(1) also covers size of markings for "antique" aircraft.  It looks
like "antique" is > 30 years old.

The way they write these regs reminds me of the joke where the tower
rattles
off a pilot's clearance at about 100MPH and the following dialog occurs:
pilot: "Was any of that imporant?"
tower: "Yes, that was your clearance!"
pilot: "Then how 'bout saying it a little slower like it's important"

These are the rules we are supposed to live by, but they sure ain't easy
to
read.  I think they get harder for me to read each year.  I used to have
no
trouble with them when I could concentrate better, study longer, ...
