I had a control cable break on my lawn mower once, and again on my
motorcycle, both without resulting in an accident or incident.. I'm sure
the FAA staff has had similar experiences so they know what they are
talking
about. Afterall, everyone knows what makes a plane fly--you don't have to
be a pilot just to make aviation rules.

I'm not generally so cynical, but this decision was not made with an
engine
running-- unless it was reported out of context. Is there more to it than
was reported? In the meantime, keep checking the approved parts on your
plane--they do break inspite of having the FAA-god's approval.
