Coupers; Home sweet home. We left Gastonia about 7:30 this AM. Climbing to 8,500 ft did not get us clear of the haze. I spent over 4 hours on the instruments today because there was no horizon and limited visibility. We arrived in Frostproof about 1:15 PM after stopping for fuel in Claxton, GA
and Dunnelon, FL for fuel. These were the only two consecutive fuel stops on the entire trip where the fuel cost was less than $2/gallon. I wish now that I had kept close records of the amount of fuel we used for the entire trip. We flew 9,010 miles in 90 hours and 50 minutes and made 53 landings. However, that time includes all the taxi time from engine start to engine shut down. Therefore, I believe that we averaged slightly more than 100 miles per hour. The Coupe performed beautifully. I added two quarts of oil, and changed the oil and filter in California after the first 34 hours. The only maintenance required was the replacing of the broken cowling mounting screw in Texas, and the pilots window I broke in South Dakota in those 35 - 45 mph gusty winds. We visited 28 National Parks/Monuments/Historical sights and two theme parks in 13 states and were gone 42 days. Much to my surprise, Joel says that the highlights of the trip were the visits to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks, as well as the visit to Wind Cave National Park. I also had a terrific time talking to you Coupers all over the country, and I consider my highlight as the National Convention in College Park.
