The B-24 liberator and B-25 "mitchell" are the reason I named my coupe
"Baby
Mitch" gotta love them "H" tails, big and small.
I landed at a very small old airstrip at Ilwaco, Wa. (out on the
Pacific
Ocean, next to the outlet of the Columbia River) . Now, at this airstrip,
there is absolutly nothing but grass and a stretch of pavement running
down
the middle. The freeway jogs around it w/ no fences or parking area. No
airplanes other than mine. Ahh... a sunny day and the smell of grass and
my
own personal airport. About this time an old 51 Chev pickup drives up and
the
old guy wants to talk airplanes. He tells me about the B-25 that landed at

"THIS VERRRY AIRSTRIP" back after the war, and they had to wait until
after
spring for the ground to dry out, so it could take off again. He looks at
my
coupe and with a gleam in his eye... "why this looks like a Baby Mitchell
you've got here" . He walked away laughing at himself and presumably me. I

have yet to fly in and out of that airstrip without someone telling me
that
story.
