----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- The fellow who had the bolt in the cylinder - must've been dropped into the carb heat shroud around the muffler, not into the exhaust itself. This could happen anytime, not just when rebuilding the engine, as the carb heat intake hole is right there on the baffle on the top of the engine. I am not sure what he means by "starter bolt," as the bolts at the top of the engine holding the starter on would surely be too long to work their way through the carb heat system, but you never know! Anyhow, they are normally safety wired which would prevent them from coming loose. If one did come loose, it would in fact be on a good heading for the carb heat tube. The carb heat intake up top on the rear baffle is not filtered, none are, but it doesn't even have 1/4" squares chicken wire over it. That could prevent this, and I have seen some planes with that chicken wire over the hole. Most likely, your mechanic dropped something down the tube last time the plane was worked on, or something up top on the engine vibrated loose while flying and went down the tube. I take my tube loose and cover it with a rubber glove whenever working in the area. Glen Ward
