Here in Provo, Utah, we have a great airport. The local community college
has a commercial flight
program. They have a bunch of Katana's for trainers. Provo has no tower.
If you want, you can Provo
Unicom for advisory, and if they're monitoring they'll give you the runway
the last reported traffic
used. The problem is that on a Saturday, when all the trainers are doing
touch and go's, this place can
be a zoo. If someone came in that didn't follow the "reported" pattern,
it could be a disaster. When
I'm coming in to land, I generally report my intentions, position, and
altitude about 5 times prior to
actually entering the 45 for down wind. I don't do this to be considerate
to others, I do it because I
fear for my life. I figure the more pilots out there that know where I
am, and what I'm going to do,
the better. I just can't figure people who can totally disregard safety.
By the way, you can still
take off and land at Provo without a radio. I've looked up at times and
it looks like a swarm of bees.
I believe only the brain dead would try to come in without the radio.
