I went to a seminar at Oshkosh about Ercoupe Maintenance. It was put on by
John Wright Sr and he had
some pieces of coupes that he'd removed due to corrosion. One of the
pieces was a section of an aileron
where the push rod connects to the arm on the aileron. It was really
scarey to think that this came off
of a 'flying' coupe. The metal was completely gone, yes 'gone' as in no
longer there. You could just
make out the edge of the innermost rivet hole. That whole corner was just
corroded away. John said that
'someone' had put it together with epoxy and painted over it and it was
not at all visible from the
outside.
Actually, scarey isn't the right word for it, DANGEROUS is the word
I'll use!!! Any idea what would
happen if that 'glue joint' let go while the plane was in the air? Would
the disabled aleron
streamline itself with the wing and allow you to land safely with only one
aileron functioning? Hmmmmm
something to ponder.
Personally, I'd rather have both of my ailerons connected, just to be
sure.
