Thanks for the research. Good job of reporting!
Thanks for passing the info on.

The Aviation Consumer did a report on Monoxide Detectors in their latest issue.

They rated the SafeTest 90 as the best of the bunch.  It is an electrochemical device and costs about $295 retail and you have to replace the sensor at a cost of $185 every two years.

The next best one was the AIM696  and the AIM 935.  Both of these are electrochemical sensor designs.  The 696 is $45 and intended for home use.  The 935 is $80 and can be used in vehicles and airplanes.  It has to be replaced completely every 3-4 years.  It will detect low levels (below 50ppm).  They said the AIM products also have a history of failing but that the work good when they work.

They also tested the COStar which is a biomimetric design with a 9 volt battery.  It retails for about $60.   Their test indicated that it did not react fast enough.

They also tested the Dead Spot which costs about $4-5.  The Dead Spot is a biominmetric spot affixed to a 2" square of plastic.  It took about 5 minutes to darken the Dead Spot in their tests, but not as fast as the electrochemical types.  Also, it won't register low level CO (less than 50ppm) enough to see the spot change color.  But at 100ppm it functions ok apparently.  They reported that the Dead Spot said to replace after 30 days but that the instructions on the back said to replace every 90 days.

The Quantum Eye is also a biomimetric spot and costs about $10.  It measured up to its advertized claims of measuring 100ppm in 45 min, 200 ppm in 19 minutes and 400 ppm in 9 minutes, but they said it was slower to respond than the Dead Stop.  It too didn't detect at 50ppm.  It is suppose to have an 18 month life span but they had no opinion on that claim.

Carbon Monoxide exposure and symptoms are as follows:
A=5%     No Symptoms
B=10%    No Symptoms
C=15%    Slight headache
D=20%    Headache
E=30%    Drowsy
F=35%    Vomiting
G=40%    Collapse
H=50%    Brain damage, death

They were carefull to point out that symptoms may vary by person and impairment may occur before symptoms.

So there you go, for what its worth.
