Hey Larry,

I don't think the idea was to drop the A-bomb, I think it was going to BE
the A-bomb.  The reason they changed their mind was due to the width of
the
coupe.  They couldn't very well call the bomb "Skinny Boy" so they went
with a traditional bomb and named it "Fat Boy" accordingly.  You are also
correct in that as a secondary reason, it was much too friendly looking to
be used as a bomb.  I think the word used by Pres. Truman in the actual
quote was "cute."

My understanding is that the Coupe was used extensively as a long range
heavy bomber.  It was originally
picked as the bomber of choice to drop the A-bomb on Japan.  Those plans
were changed before the actual
deed.  Reason sited was " the Coupe is much too friendly looking to be
used for that purpose".
