Hi, Gang.
The "Landing Gear Biggots," like the Grinch, may always be with
us. There is
really a use for both.
First off, if 'conventional' landing gear was bad, it would never
have
become, well,
conventional. Planes were slower and lighter in the old days. And you
could land
in any direction on an "air Field." Tail skids also helped to keep the
tail behind.
Problems occured when faster planes evolved. They landed longer, and
needed
hard surfaces to keep from sinking in! Since you couldn't pave a whole
Field, you
just did the Runways, where the plan ran. Not having runways running in
all
directions helped make the conventional gear hazardous. The trike gear
doesn't
keep the prop out of the mud as well, though.
As a single-forked nose geared person, I feel there is no inherant
risk
in that
arrangement. Persons transitioning from 'Conventional' to "tricycle' have
to bear
in mind that their attempt to "Wheel Land" places the nose in a position
to hit
first - not good form.
To sum up - each has its good and bad points. My missions are filled
by trike
gear. And my Ercoupe has about the best one of those going.
