Good summary, Percy. I'd also add Wolfgang Langewiesche's comment from "Stick and Rudder" which says the conventional gear isn't a 'landing' gear, it's a TAKEOFF gear. It sets the plane on the ground in the nose-high take-off attitude. That's its purpose on short, rough fields. It's great for a bush plane and, in the '30s all planes were bush planes. For the last 50 years, our planes have been 'airport' planes. For that, as Percy points out, tricycle gears have distinct advantages.
