You simply cannot lose compression or Pounds per Square Inch in a
cylinder (as in "removing spark plugs) by advancing or retarding timing. This
is done dimensionally and mechanically. Changing the dimensions I.E. larger
pistons or longer stroke will change compression PSI, but not timing. Timing
will change the vacuum however.
It's my understanding (someone will know for sure) that the AD for
retarding the timing had to do with detonation (ping) and a structural
problem (cracked rocker boss?) that occured when suscepted to ping. I think
that the Millenium Cylinders rendered that AD "not applicable".
