Yup, had that problem, had to fix it. When I used the thick asbestos
gasket
there was no problem. When I installed new Millenium cylinders on the
plane I
used the thin gaskets that came with the cylinders. On the first flight
the
#4 cylinder leaked causing the spark plug and cht probe to overheat. That
resulted in meeting the crash truck which resulted in the FAA taking an
interest in my engine.
Cure the problem like this. Remove the pipe and take it to an automotive
machine shop to have the flanges ground flat. Not all shops can do this
work.
The ones which have a large belt sander to flatten cylinder heads on cars
can
solve your problem. If you can watch the work being done you will see
that
the flanges that looked flat to you are in fact bent down at the flange
ears.
Reinstall with any suitable gasket and go fly.
It seems to me that if the pipe was ever installed with the thick asbestos
gasket you will need to do this work because the soft gaskets allow the
flange
ears to warp when you try to tighten the old gaskets.
Good luck,
Bob Condon
