I've continued to work on this - at present, the following settings in the remote thunderbird client appear to work OK:
- (for reference) SMTP TLS with user/pass - I can send just fine
- IMAP SSL w/o auth
TLS with and w/o auth get connection refused. I don't see any relevant messages in /var/log/messages - all messages are postfix, cron, or maildrop. There's almost no output.
Let me login local to the server on sylpheed-claws....
Send some mail...
and receive it....
The only imap-specific lines from this are:

May 27 10:08:57 twiggy imapd-ssl: DISCONNECTED, user=pv, ip=[::ffff:67.180.30.48], headers=0, body=0, time=616, starttls=1
Without meaningful output, I'm having a bit of a time going from 'connection refused' to a successfully authenticated TLS imap setup.
