I think you will find that this is mostly a client-side issue. I have several mail folders with 50K and more messages in them. I use the Courier IMAP 4.1.1 (oob setup) with the following clients: pine, thunderbird, evolution and kmail. The time taken to open a large folder varies hugely between these: for a folder with 86100 messages, pine takes 3-4 seconds to open, whereas evolution and kmail take many minutes, and thunderbird is somewhere in between. The IMAP server is on a 2.1 GHz Athlon box (RHEL AS 3.1) and the clients were on a 2 GHz Athlon box (Core 6). Courier IMAP itself seems to be extremely fast: using pine, I can check my entire collection of 622 folders (containing 994,000 messages) for unseen mail in 20 seconds.
