It assumes that Maildir/ is a subdirectory of $HOME; since pam only has 
access to the info in /etc/passwd c.q. shadow, (or rather the getent 
equivalents). With LDAP one can have (much) extra info, e.g. whether the 
Maildir/ location is somewhere else than under $HOME.
