Summary: it's really very hard. If you can drop either the offsite or the
real-time requirement, it gets considerably more practical.

You could do it at filesystem block level, e.g. with drbd (www.drbd.org),
but you'll need LOTS of bandwidth, and also need to run it over a VPN for
security.

You can buy two Netapps (www.netapp.com) and use snap-mirroring. Expensive.

You can run your own ZFS-based filer (Solaris? FreeBSD 7?) and use its
similar snapshot copying feature. Kit of parts.

If it doesn't have to be quite "real time" then you could look at things
like imapsync, which connect to both servers using IMAP and sync the
contents at the IMAP protocol level. That might also give you live-live
service with two-way mirroring.

If it's only occasional one-way backup, rsync might be sufficient.

Warning: I haven't tried any of these solutions in a large-scale WAN (i.e.
offsite mirror) environment.
