Jay and Simon, thanks for your replies. I was brought to think that Thunderbird had problems by some messages on this list, from May IIRC. We have had problems in the past on some machines using Thunderbird, but that was with old machines (and we use SSL that is no lighweight). We have no really humongous mailboxes (I have, with up to 30000 messages each, that is, I'd say, well above average - but don't use Windows). I have tried on a test machine the latest, as of today, Thunderbird and it seems fine, as it should! So we'll go ahead with that and thank you again for confirming that it should have no problems.
