Now I know that at least some of those messages have been caused by a user who was trying to access the IMAP mailbox with Thunderbird 1.0, and failed. After upgrading to Thunderbird 2.0 and changing the setting from SSL (TB 1.0 supports no TLS) to TLS made it work again, and there were no such error messages at the times when he accessed his mailbox again. But I have reason to believe that this was not the only cause of those messages.

Have there been any changes between Courier-IMAP 4.1.0 and 4.4.1 and Courier-authlib 0.58 and 0.61.0 that affect SSL support?

Yes -- this was documented in ChangeLog and release notes. You should reset TLS_PROTOCOL and TLS_STARTTLS_PROTOCOL to their default values.
