As gamin conflicts with fam, depending on gamin would in fact solve the problem

The primary advantage, AFAIK, is that if you're using NFS, the FAM daemon on your NFS client will talk to the FAM daemon on your NFS server. Your FAM daemon will be notified if another NFS client modified the filesystem your NFS client has mounted.
