Hello,

After the upgrade of an old server with courier-imap 4.x to latest 5.0.11 version, I keep seeing this well known alert on several mails (and it is generating some support requests too):

"Alert from account xyz: Message 54803 appears to be a Unicode message and your E-mail reader did not enable Unicode support. Please use an E-mail reader that supports IMAP with UTF-8 (see
https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6855.html)"

This happens with the latest Thunderbird version, and the message source file in maildir looks relatively normal, the only thing that is maybe causing the issue is that there are non encoded UTF8 chars in the subject: (also without "=?utf-8?...").

> From: "Hôtel Mercure" <sur...@xyz.com>

But at the end the message is rendered just fine in all my mail clients, also thunderbird, so my question would be: is this alert really necessary or couldn't we just disable it (or at least make it configurable) in a later version of courier-imap ?

It seems to come from courier-imap-5.0.11/libs/imap/fetch.c and I see no option to disable it without manually patching the file.

I saw the issue mentioned several times on some forums, and it seems a solution mentioned often is "switch to Dovecot", and it is not really the plan here... :)

What would you suggest and how are you handling this kind of issue ?
Thanks & best regards,
Olivier
