A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far way, someone said...

Cool :)

Ok

Take it slow: some of the things you want to do can be daunting unless
you've dealt with them before.

One word: LDAP. Almost everything speaks it. It's rare to find something
that doesn't.

Courier doesn't have a directory service of it's own, but it can use LDAP
for directory lookups. All you need is either OpenLDAP or iPlanet
Directory Server - recent versions of the latter require Solaris/SPARC,
AIX/PPC, HP-UX/PA-RISC, WinNT/2k/Intel, or Tru64/Alpha, however. If this
mail system gets big enough (ie 6000+ users) it might be prudent to
consider iPlanet DS on one of the systems I mentioned.

Eudora 5 on Windows understands LDAP just fine. I don't have a Mac around
to test Eudora on that.

It might, eventually, be a good idea to have IMP & Courier on different
systems. You'll have to see how well this server handles the load. A
second CPU will definitely help; I don't know if that's an option for you.

Is Kerberos strictly required by TPTB? If you don't need the mail system
itself to speak Kerberos LDAP is all you need; Exim and Courier IMAP can
talk to LDAP directly and get all the information they need out of it.

I would start with Courier IMAP. It's better documented :)

PS: "TPTB" = "the powers that be" aka your boss and his boss, or even
    higher up the ladder
