Hi all. Perhaps I am just tired, but I can't find a search mechanism on the
archives, and I was not finding a similar problem to that which I am going
to describe. However, given the amount of documentation on authentication I
think it must be a trouble spot for many. Anyhow, I am new to Linux. I have
RH 7.2 (2.4.7-10). I have installed postfix and have it configured for
Maildir format. I have mail being delivered to my home dir. I installed
Courier IMAP by compiling the source. I did not create an rpm. I did
follow the instructions re: non-root for all but the make install.
Everything appeared to go fine, although there was lots of output so I am
not certain of that. Certainly there were no errors reported at the end.

Anyhow, I can not seem to authenticate through Outlook Express. I get the
following in /var/log/maillog

Feb 20 00:02:12 gateway imapd: Connection, ip=[::ffff:192.168.1.2]
Feb 20 00:02:17 gateway imapd: LOGIN FAILED, ip=[::ffff:192.168.1.2]
Feb 20 00:02:17 gateway imapd: DISCONNECTED, ip=[::ffff:192.168.1.2],
headers=0, body=0
Feb 20 00:02:17 gateway imapd: Connection, ip=[::ffff:192.168.1.2]
Feb 20 00:02:22 gateway imapd: LOGIN FAILED, ip=[::ffff:192.168.1.2]
Feb 20 00:02:22 gateway imapd: DISCONNECTED, ip=[::ffff:192.168.1.2],
headers=0, body=0

Also if I telnet to port 143 directly I don't seem to get any valid
responses, although I am not sure what the IMAP protocol is.

I have tried the commented out original authmodulelist in authdaemonrc
below, as well as changing it to just authpam, just authshadow, and finally
just authpwd. None work. I am restarting the daemon between each change. I
have also included my imap PAM file below. Can anyone provide any
guidance/help?

Thanks very much.
