[courier-users] Manually enter passwords?

Sorry, I'm a bit new to Linux and Courier.  I seem to have courier set up and running, although when I check a test email account through pop3 the password always shows as incorrect.  I was under the assumption that Courier would default to checking the system passwords for password verification?   Is there some way I can manually go in and set a password in Courier?   thanks, Brian
