Thanks!  thats exactly what I found. In pine I looked for duplicate
messages or messages that would not open and grep'd the files in
maildir/cur using a snippet of text from wonky messages.  found the 2
files and removed the "shorter" of the two.  quit pine, waited a very long
time for it to close gracefully, and when I re-opened pine it worked fine.

Pine connecting via courier-imap is sluggish, and keeps saying "x"
messages expunged from "INBOX"  but seems to be deleting nothing.  Caused
excessive cpu ussage in imapd.
