I just replaced 60 machines with Outlook 2000 and Courier-IMAP 1.4.4 on
the server (upgraded from MS Exchange).

It's now having permanent trouble. Outlook clients regularly get messages
"Unable to download new headers". In typical helpful Microsoft fashion,
there is no further detail given.

My syslog however reports that May 31 19:21:16 mail imapd: DISCONNECTED,
ip=[::ffff:172.16.1.1], headers=0, body=0

body is usually, but not always, 0. user is sometimes set. The time
between login (where applicable) and disconnection is also variable.

The clients are all behind a firewall on the same IP address. The
configuration file has been altered to allow 100 daemons and 100 from the
same IP address (MAXPERIP).

Despite the fact that there are 60 clients trying to connect during the
day, there are never more than 20-30 imapd processes running (though this
could just be a symptom of connection trouble).

I thought it might be a timeout issue so I manually recompiled with a new
SOCKET_TIMEOUT of 600 and then 1200. This did not help.

Searching on google revealed Outlook has problems with IDLE, so I disabled
the IDLE command. This also did not help.

I'm somewhat perplexed. Ideally I would like to log all connections with
'recordio' but Courier-IMAP does not function under recordio (even when
run using tcpserver rather than couriertcpd).

If anyone has experienced/solved this problem with Outlook, or has an
idea how to log all the IMAP connection data, please let me know.

Cheers,

David
