Sun's filesystem is dog-ass slow.  I wouldn't be suprised if Linux on old 
hardware beats the pants off the Sun, in terms of filesystem performance.  
Go install Courier-IMAP on the Linux box, it'll probably be faster than the 
Sun. 

Courier-IMAP is a rather thin layer between IMAP and the filesystem, so all 
your performance tuning belongs in the operating system.
