Outlook really likes to use the IDLE option (as Micro$oft exchange supports
this)
try enabling the idle option for imapd (I usually do it with webadmin)

Make sure in the imap tab in the setup of the account in outlook you
manually set the root folder path to "INBOX."
(that's uppercase INBOX with a dot)

By using the IDLE option, courier will notify outlook when a new mail
arrives instead of outlook needing to poll. Perhaps you have outlook
polling at a really short interval (less than a couple of minutes). This
fixes the problem of you needing to click off and back onto the inbox to
force the header download.

I have many outlook express clients running much better since the IDLE
option became available. I edit the buttons and take off the send-receive
button from the tool bar.
