Systems that use a package manager -- any package manager -- should not install directly from the tarball but use the package manager to the greatest extent possible. Red Hats should build from the packaged RPM script, Debians should install the .deb port, and various BSDs should use the port system. The corresponding maintainers should be responsive and make sure that their packaging is not stale. Supposedly the current RPM script also works on Mandrake.
