if you configure --without-authdaemon you cant authenticate against any autdaemon, but you can use the same authmodules as the authdaemon does (cram, userdb etc., see authinfo). check out ./configure --help how to set the directory for the authdaemon-socket or the location of userdb. I'd simply install the complete courier-suite, its only a few mb slack on disk, and no more trouble.
