Well I tried rebuilding libvpopmail.a, then rebuild authdaemon and the
problem persists. I wrote a work around that does a local auth using
authtest and when it detects a failure authdaemon restarts. While VERY crude
seems to be a solid work around. I have been trying to chase the
interactions between vpopmail the mysql client. From some kernel tracing it
seems that the software is randomly choking on the local mysql socket. I may
try to change mysql from a socket to network. I seem to get from 20,000 to
60,000 auths from the daemon before it hangs.

Courier IMAP
Adrian,
did you rebuild and reinstall your courier-imap?
Now if I'm wrong about this I'm going to make a fool of myself, but here
goes:
lib*.a (such as libvpopmail.a) -- as far as I know -- implies static linking
so the previous (possibly bad) code is embedded into your authdaemon.
Vpopmail is now using the code from your rebuild but your courier-imap won't
be, not untill you rebuild and reinstall.
