Hi All,
I am having an annoying pop3 timed out problem. My email client software
is Outlook 2002, and the mail server is courier-imap server. I didn't
compile it with --enable-workarounds-for-imap-client-bugs.
Since I upgrade my outlook from version 2000 to 2002, this timed-out
problem started and has been quite annoying to me. Since outlook 2002
starts many pop3 sessions simultaneously to each account, I dumped my
old UW-imap server and made a move to courier-imap with a believing that
courie-imap can handle multi-sessions. Courier-imap does the job,
however, it doesn't always do the job. The time-out problem pops up
occasionally. Microsoft says "they are aware of this, but not solution
so far." I think maybe I could somehow work this out on server side.
here is the log from the server:
Dec 14 10:40:16 storm pop3d: Connection, ip=[::ffff:192.168.100.71]
Dec 14 10:40:16 storm pop3d: LOGIN, user=benson, ip=[::ffff:192.168.100.71]
Dec 14 10:41:16 storm pop3d: DISCONNECTED, user=benson,
ip=[::ffff:192.168.100.71], top=0, retr=0
Dec 14 10:41:16 storm pop3d: Connection, ip=[::ffff:192.168.100.71]
Dec 14 10:41:17 storm pop3d: LOGIN, user=benson, ip=[::ffff:192.168.100.71]
Dec 14 10:41:19 storm pop3d: LOGOUT, user=benson,
ip=[::ffff:192.168.100.71], top=0, retr=3688
The third line indicates the connection timed out without a proper
logout. I tried to set the time-out time to be a longer one in outlook.
It seems not to work for me. I feel that while the email server is
serving the first pop3 session - a transfer process is launched, the
second pop3 session from outlook to the same account actually confuses
the server. The server may think the first session failed somehow, and
therefore, it terminates the first session and starts the transfer
procedure again for the second one. The result is my emails are getting
duplicated, and both outlook and email server getting time-out errors.
Any help here?
Benson
