Yes, it does take about 30 seconds to get response but I do get a response back with "220 Cmail ESMTP" instead of timing out. I did check the dns server and also atttempted to run identd etc, everything works fine. If it's a DNS problem, could you point me to a solution?

you're probably waiting for dns to resolve - ie, it's timing out while
trying to resolve DNS. does it take roughly 30 seconds?
