Your mail server should not be accepting mail to nonexistent recipients. I know that's how Qmail works. It's broken.

The server is behind a dumb smarthost. The smarthost accepts everything (non-relay) anyway. However, if it would help, I can (temporarily) alias a port on the smarthost with rinetd so you can connect directly to the courier server. The smarthost is explicitly listed in smtpaccess with the parameter allow (to explicitly disable RELAYCLIENT).
Any other diagnostic info you need?
I know it *used* to work, before I had to rebuild the server...
