OK, I think I'm getting it, tell me if this is right. The issue seems
to be that Courier-IMAP and Qmail both need a source of user
information. Qmail's "dot-qmail" files are not enough info for
Courier-IMAP. On the other hand, Courier-IMAP's many authentication
methods don't make any sense to Qmail. Therefore we need some glue,
and that glue can be (eg in the first HOWTO) the maildrop program, or
(eg in the 2nd HOWTO) the unix password file. Am I there?
Almost there.

I don't think any glue is absolutely required between qmail and Courier-IMAP. Qmail needs to be told where to put mail and Courier-IMAP needs to be told where to get it from and the two programs can go about getting these bits of information in completely separate ways. That's what allows you to mix and match MTAs and IMAP servers.

Having said that, it is often convenient to provide a common source of information when that information is needed by more than one program. I think this is what the HOWTOs you mentioned are discussing.

Also, as Sam pointed out, adding some glue between programs can make them work better.

If you're looking for a way to set up all your mail users as virtual users using qmail and Courier-IMAP, check out http://www.arda.homeunix.net/mailsetup.shtml.

Please excuse the shameless self promotion but I couldn't help myself.
