Look into your maillog, run authinfo, try POP3,
and tell us what auth-method you are trying.

There is a world beside Microsoft (and even alternatives to
Hotmail), use something else for testing like Telnet, Mulberry
Mozilla etc. which will show you the response from the server
instead of useless made-up messages.
