Some more info:
authtest user password - works
authtest -s imap user password - doesn't
authtest -s pop3 user password - doesn't
No errors in telnet pop3 authentication apart from "LOGIN FAILED". Also - there appears to be a slight delay between me sending the password and it replying that it failed
Nothing appearing in /var/log/maillog at this point

Look into your maillog, run authinfo, try POP3,
and tell us what auth-method you are trying.

There is a world beside Microsoft (and even alternatives to
Hotmail), use something else for testing like Telnet, Mulberry
Mozilla etc. which will show you the response from the server
instead of useless made-up messages.
