Finally I discovered that courier doesn't detect parent maildirs as sharable.
I was trying to share a Maildir , not a folder within a maildir.
What I need is to share a users INBOX. namespace. I tried creating a symbolic link

Maildir
/ | \ \
tmp/ /new /cur .shared ==> ../Maildir


to fool courier into sharing the INBOX.

Is there a more elegant way of doing this?
