You will probably want to resolve this before checking into another client. Maybe posting some client & server settings you have set?

Or can anyone recommend a better mail client that works with IMAP over SSL
under Windows XP to replace Outlook? Preferably a low cost option given
Outlook is free.
MS Outlook isn't free.
Eudora was suggested as an alternative - I personally found it inconvenient to have to convert and merge my certificate into a new .p7b file for Eudora, and the IMAP folder listing is all incorrect - I got the folders to show inline, but then they ALSO showed as subfolders of INBOX. Bleh. Eudora used to be my client of choice, but their lack of updates, and bad IMAP + SSL implementations made me move away. Plus the sponsored mode is annoying ;)
As an excellent alternative, I'd suggest Mozilla. It's completely free, cross platform (now I can use same settings on my linux boxes, and Windows boxes, and any others I may decide to setup), easy to import root certificate (same way as IE - just access your CA.crt through a web browser), and so far is giving me excellent performance. Not to mention the continuous development and plenty of open support. Plus if you find any bugs, submit to Bugzilla - they even like duplicates!
Maybe to diagnose the above program, try Mozilla and see if you get disconnect errors also. If not, then it may be a setting in Outlook. If so, it may be a setting in Courier. For additional help on both clients, might I suggest,

Hope this helps,
