Courier imapd appears to object to passwords with [ ] in them, unless they are quoted e.g.
LOGIN pdw my[]pass fails LOGIN pdw "my[]pass" is OK. My reading of the RFC is that the former is indeed valid, and certainly my mail client doesn't bother to escape them.
