I asked this some time ago, but saw no response. From my reading of the RFC, courier imap's behaviour is broken.
Courier imapd objects to passwords with [ or ] in them, unless they are quoted: LOGIN pdw my[]pass fails, but LOGIN pdw "my[]pass" fails.
